Welcome to Queensland Stock Cars
Queensland Title night 1 & night 2, 2011
G'day Mudslingers,
with the Trophy up for grabs, the racing faces were all 'on' last night. The threat of rain didn't dampen the enthusiam of the competitors and the racing showed this. With three drivers from New Zealand added to the mix, and the fact the locals dont want to see the Trophy go across the ditch, again, it was a recipe for action. Supplied with one of the quickest cars in the club, Rotorua peddler Dale Stewart didn't disappoint with 3 wins and quick time for the night at 17.5sec. Hawkes Bay driver Aaron Iremonger had a handling problem in the first heat due to the fact that 3 wheels are not as good as 4. We are a sharing lot as Marty Wilkinson gave his car up for Dale to drive and Mark Strachan gave up his car for Marty to drive and when Aaron's car expired, Marty gave up his drive so the Kiwi could continue on. Onya fellas. The defending Title holder, Brent Haynes, the 3rd of the 'noctournal flightless birds' was having issues with his ride supplied by Frank De Haas, with it being a new car having teething problems, and breaking something on the front that needed welding, but hey, thats racing.
Heat 1 saw Dale pull to the infield after the dizzy had a spack, and the routine pile up in turn 1 that would take Aaron out was the end of trouble for the race which continued on with Brett Tobin taking the win with 'the quiet achiever' Jason Martin in second and rounding out the top 3 was John Melbourne with a good drive.
Heat 2 saw the start of a winning night with Dale blasting away for the win with Kev Healy, making a return to racing, in 2nd and a well deserved 3 to Vera Tobin.
Heat 3 was a ripper with Dale, Brett and Jason locked in a 3 way battle that continued throughout the event. Dale held the lead with Jason and Brett in hot pursuit and a final corner outside lunge from Brett religated Jason to 3rd. Times were dropping and all is set for the 4th heat and how bloody good was it? ......bloody good. With Dale out of pole and Brett beside him it was shaping up for something special and it was. From the 'get it on' flag, Brett and Dale were at it. Side by side, lap after lap, then Dale got in front and Brett crossed behind to take up the inside running and so it went on and then the red lights came on. The people around me and myself were enjoying the skills up front, we all missed the 1st roll over of the season. Mark Strachan had a moment of 'Skytrackskytrack' at the opposite end to the leaders. Mark is okay and will have another story to tell as well as some work on the car to be ready for next Saturday nights heats and the Big One. Dale went on to win with Brett in 2nd, TBA for 3rd.
All in all it was a great nights racing with the promise of a big finish to the Qld Title next Satdy night. Aaron, in the slower car, still had solid finishes and i'm sure we havne't seen the best of him yet and also Brent will have the first night woes out of the way, ready for a big one in the Final. John Melbourne, Mark Heap, Vera and Mark 'did you see my rollover, let me tell ya about it' Strachan, along with Kev Healy had good hit outs and will be primed for next week also.
Thanks must go to Brett and Vera Tobin for putting up a car for Aaron, also Marty Wilkinson for putting up his car for Dale and Frank De Haas for the car for Brent. Great to meet the Kiwi support team that came with their drivers and helping to make this event successfull. There is a great connection between Aussie and Kiwi Stockcar racing and it can only get bigger.
See you for the final next week.

NIGHT 2 & FINAL
It just continues on with great racing when a Title is on the line and night 2 didn't disappoint. On a slippery surface, heat 5 produced a great leveler for all cars and a terrific drive by John Melbourne saw him lead the race but his only blemish was with a lap to go, had a partial spin which was enough for Dale to sneek through and take the win. Defending Champ Brent Haynes finished in 3rd. Heat 6 saw Shane French get away to a good start out of pole with John on the outside and Jason Martin in hot pursuit and it wasn't long before Dale joined in. John had a deflation with 1 tyre and that left Dale and Jason to fight it out and what a battle it was with Jason getting the better of the pair and finishing in that order. Brett also got a flat as a result of getting squashed between Brent and the wall and no.....it was just a racing incident. Heat 7 showed another good drive from Johnno who lead for most of the race again, only to be passed by the dueling Shane & Brett to finish with Shane taking the win, Brett in for 2nd and Johnno rounding out the top 3.
Title race time!! Brett Tobin top point scored so he was out of pole and on the outside was Jason Martin. Inside 2nd row was Dale Stewart with John Melbourne outside, behind him was Mark Strachan with Vera Tobin on the inside. Row 3 had Aaron Iremonger inside Shane French with Kev Healy bring up the rear. From the 'get go' Brett and Dale renewed hostilities with side by side racing again with Jason lingering behind waiting for a chance. A multi car pile up brought on the yellows with Vera Tobin in a tangle with John Melbourne and Mark Strachan. At the restart, Dale got a bit of a break on Brett and Jason and the rest of the field that was left battled on. As the Chequer waved, Dale Stewart from NZ is the new Queensland Champ with the runner up in Brett Tobin and Jason Martin in for 3rd.
So the trophy goes across the ditch again but no complaints from the locals as Dale was supplied 1 of the best cars in the club and he showed us that he could drive it to suit. Brett threw everything at him to get around him but it wasn't to be. The 'Quiet Achiever', Jason, again showed us his style and concidering it was the cars 3rd race meeting, he has done well. Onya's must go to Kev Healy and Jade Riseley, for getting the 91 car back on track after a belt broke and a power steering bit went wrong which meant Jade had to drive back to the workshop to get the bits, fit them and get back on the track. Well done boys. Aaron was a bit off the pace but his style showed us why he finished 3rd in the World of Stocks. Brent had a 'not going anywhere' problem thanks to a gearbox re-arrangement and James McEwens night was over early with a combination of hick ups. A very disappointed Mark Heap had a problem with a breather hole appearing in the side of the block which will pretty much stuff everything. The 3 cars in the pile up, in the words of a Rolls Royce Tech would say, "failed to proceed".
Well done to all concerned with many thanks to Brett & Vera for the work they have done for the Title. Thanks also to the Support Crews who came over from NZ to help their countrymen out and boost the liquid refreshment industry a plenty.
See ya in the mud.
