Queensland Stock Car Titles 2010

As expected, the Qld Title got off to a flyer with all competitors showing their
intentions from the get go. The local drivers out to stop the Trophy going across the ditch and the Visiting New Zealand drivers trying to spoil the party. Dennis Fabian's night finished early with a puncture in the fuel tank, to big for a chewing gum repair, and Vera Tobins campaign finished in the wall on the main straight bending a front axle. Marty Wilkinson took out the first heat after starting out of position 2. Aussie Champ, Nick Cameron, came through the field to fill 2nd and New Dad, Kev Healy finished out the placings. Best placed Kiwi was Paul Mabey gaining 5 spots to run 6th while fellow Kiwi's, Brent Haynes and Scott Hayward were learning about the track conditions.
The second heat saw some of the best racing this season with Leisa Cameron, starting outside Paul Mabey, leaving the field in her wake with a Top Drive taking the win by a country mile and with the rest of the field racing close enough to throw a blanket over, half a lap behind.   Nick Cameron made it a Cameron Quinella and Jade Riseley being pressured by Paul Mabey and Marty Wilkinson finishing in that order.  Speaking to all the drivers after that heat, it was very clear how much they enjoy their sport by sharing the positions and even trading each others paint on the odd occaision.
Heat 3 showed why Nick is the Aussie Champ with the chequer all his but having Kev Healy in hot pursuit and NZ82 Brent Haynes improving each outing to round out the placings. Paul Mabey had to sit that 1 out with a radiator drama. It was a big hole and needed more than a spot of pepper to fill the gap. Leisa Cameron also out with a drive line problem. I believe it had something to do with a lack of connection from gearbox to engine.
Heat 4 saw how Brent was inproving with a good win in style having started out of position 5, making his way through the field to beat Marty and Paul Mabey in for 3rd.  All in all it was a great nights racing and the only complaint from the Kiwi's, 'need power steering'.
Cant wait for next weeks heats and Final as it will be anyones race.

Night 2 Heats and Final
The night started off with a flurry and it was obvious it was going to be on for young and old. Speaking of the not so young, Dennis Fabian, who lasted 3 laps on night 1 before rupturing his fuel tank, never made the heat 1 grid on night 2 due to a discretion with the officials. Something to do with him still having his dancing shoes on instear of his race boots. It's ok, the night got better for 'The Fossil'. NZ82 Brent Haynes showed his intention with a win in the first of the night followed by Marty Wilkinson and Paul Mabey in for third. Damage from that heat saw Leisa Cameron out for the night and Scott Hayward and Brent Haynes miss the next 2 heats.
Kev Healy took out the next heat but was hotly persued by Dennis Fabian and rounding out the top 3 was Marty Wilkinson with Vera Tobin right behind.
After his earlied discretions and a 2nd in the previous heat, Dennis Fabian won the next in fine style holding off Paul Mabey and Jade Riseley with Jimi Pinakera and Vera Tobin next to finish.
While all this is going on, there were mercy dashes all over town bringing parts to get cars out for the feature and they did.
The night started with 12 and there was 10 start the Final. General consensis had Marty Wilkinson as Favourite ahead of Nick Cameron and Paul Mabey for the Title before racing started. With Nick out of the final, the field lined up as follows. Out of pole, Marty Wilkinson and on the outside was Brent Haynes, on the inside of Jade Riseley on the second row was Paul Mabey. Row 3 had Kev Healy inside Mick Finlay and behind him on the outside was Jimi Pinikera with Vera Tobin inside followed by Dennis Fabian inside Scott Hayward and the field was set. Marty got the jump on Brent to lead after the first turn and it would stay that way for many laps with the rest of the field having their own battles for position with Jade ahead of Paul and Kev in hot pursuit. As the laps rolled by, the racing was getting intense withBrent right on Martys bumper and a slower car down the back straight created an opportunity while Marty passed it on the inside, Brent went around the outside and hit the front much to the delight of the Kiwi followers on site. Mean while, back in the pack, Jade had a bit of a lose giving Kev the opening to take over 3rd. Paul was gaining on Kev but the laps ran out and NZ82 Brent Haynes is the 2010 Queensland Champ with Marty Wilkinson in 2nd and Kev Healy taking out 3rd place. The rest of the field were Paul, Dennis, Vera, Jimi and Mick and that was that.
Thanks must go to the Committee for their work in setting the Title up and Brett Tobin, Overseas Liasion Officer, and wife Vera, for bringing the Kiwi's over and looking after them while they were here.  Good job folks. Well done to all the drivers and car owners for some great racing and Shane French, Dudley Ward and Ken Finlay for putting up their cars for the Kiwi's.
Thanks for reading,
Ryano
